Inspired by his recent exhibition, Soldiery – which featured 278 portraits of British Army soldiers – Rory Lewis leads this course focused on developing your skills in portrait photography.

 

Rory’s fun and practical learning techniques and use of professional models will help you hone your skills and add to your photography portfolio. Aimed at both amateur and more experienced photographers, the course will cover studio flash lighting, the effect of soft boxes, umbrellas, snoots and reflectors. You’ll learn what a light’s main function is and how lighting affects the final image.

10 – 11.30am How to use your Camera Equipment:

• How to hold your camera correctly, which helps you to get sharp photos every time.
• Which lenses to use for which photos, so that you can best capture a specific subject or scene.
• How to change lenses correctly in order to prevent irritating dust spots from forming on each photograph.
• What your DSLR camera’s limitations are and how to compensate for them when you’re photographing scenes with high contrast.
• Why and when you should support your camera on tripods and bean bags.

How and when to change Camera Settings:

11.30 – 1.00pm How to be more creative:

• Different Shooting modes (which allows you to be more creative).
• File size and format (ensuring that you take the best possible quality shots).
• White balance and Metering mode (which allows you to influence the ‘warmth’ or ‘coolness’ of your photos and the way that the camera exposes what it sees.
• Drive mode (which allows you to shoot like a pistol or like a machine gun).
• Auto focus mode (which tells the camera whether you’re photographing something standing still or something that is moving).
• Auto focus point selection (which allows you to focus on either the whole subject or scene, or on a very specific part of it).
• ISO (which allows you to take sharp photos in low light conditions)
• Exposure compensation (which allows you to quickly make a photo lighter or darker).
• How to influence the depth of field in your photos in Aperture Priority.
• How to freeze action or capture movement in Shutter Priority.
• How to use the little pictures, or Scene selections, on your camera’s Shooting mode dial.

Last weekend I was delighted to teach my Weekend Portrait Masterclass at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The second time the gallery has invited me to teach, and it is a real treat to use the Collection as inspiration. I had the pleasure of working with 12 delegates throughout the weekend. No stranger to the gallery I’m always popping my head through the door, to gorge upon the feast of art and intrigue. Over the years seven of my portraits have been acquired by the Gallery.

Day one began with a talk about my style of portraiture and how art has provided a great deal of inspiration in the lighting and detail of my own work. Then we moved on to talk about the work of Artists, such as Titian, Hans Holbein the Younger and Sir Thomas Lawrence. After some refreshment, the delegates toured the gallery, with a talk by myself on some of the most interesting pieces of the collection.

After lunch it was time to learn about lighting techniques using the galleries well equipped photographic studio. The delegates practiced their technique using a light meter to setup basic one and two light Renaissance Chiaroscuro Lighting with our first model. After lighting skills where taught, I demonstrated direction and how to create different emotions and moods. The delegates then took it in turn to capture a varied collection of portraits illustrating different sides of our subjects character.

Day two began with a review of all the delegates portraits from day one. We then recapped on the lighting techniques and skills. The delegates then worked in groups to re-create versions of the renaissance portraits in the gallery.

 

After lunch it was time to work with our Second and Third model, the delegates working in groups visited the gallery to plan a series of portraits using the collection as inspiration. Then taking it in turn to re-create their own versions of portraits with the subjects. Shoots completed, I reviewed all the portraits captured, and gave individual feedback on lighting and direction.

 

The course was a wonderful success, packing in as much as I possibly could over two days, the Delegates walked away with a new appreciation of art and photographic skills. In turn Capturing their own collection of portraiture. It was fascinating to see everyones unique style and approach to the practical photography session. Portraiture is my niche for over 14 years I have laboured to become one of the world’s foremost Portraitists. Throughout my career I’ve captured portraits that have been acquired by The National Portrait Gallery. Photographed many household names, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Rufus Sewell and many more. My work has been exhibited World Wide, commissioned by editorials such as The Times, The Guardian and Independent newspapers. I’ve worked for Corporate and Government clients such as The Ministry of Defence, BBC, and Pepsi and continue to develop my style of portraiture more and more.

Over the course of my career I taught my photographic technique, thoughts, ideas, inspirations and knowledge in the form of a Portrait Masterclass. In 2018 I’ll be bringing the Masterclass back to Los Angeles, London, Manchester and Edinburgh and for the first time hold workshops in New York and Boston.

The format of the Workshop will change, enabling attendees to work throughout the session with THREE DIVERSE SUBJECTS all with different characteristics. Delegates will hone their lighting and directional technique with mini projects and inventive scenarios. Group sizes will be smaller enabling more one to one instruction time with myself.
