“Low Key Portraiture with Rory Lewis”

Excellent photography workshop. We went through 8 different light set ups starting with a single light source and ending up with two light sources with the tightest control of the light. There was a lot to take in and was very happy with the photos I took. The breadth of the material covered was excellent. Very pleased to have attended. Thanks Rory!

Great portrait course at Calumet in London. Really practical course with lots of light set ups, backed up with good notes (with diagrams) emailed out by Rory after the course. I would definitely recommend one of Rory’s courses to anyone wanting to improve their photographic skills.

“Rory’s Portraiture Masterclass was a brilliant course”

8th November Low Key Portraiture Photography Course London FeedbackRory is a fantastic and patient instructor and answered all our questions no matter how basic or advanced. I took nearly 400 images throughout the day and was mentally drained and excited because we covered so much. A fantastic value for the amount of hands-on course work and topics we covered. Rory was able to get us all taking great images.

I have been an amateur photographer for years, but this was my first time using studio lighting for portraits with models. I had expected only one model, but Rory had hired three fantastic models. All had their own great characteristics, which allowed us to experiment with lighting to see the effects given different facial features.

Rory demonstrated the use of several one and two light set-ups, and allowed us to take several images from each. Additionally, we used different back drops, and reflectors. We had hands-on opportunities to use a light meter and set up the studio lights to the proper power and distance. We learned about how to diffuse the lighting and control it with a honeycomb.

He also demonstrated how he captured many famous actors that are part of his Northerners Portrait Project to support UNICEF. A noble effort. We were able to create similar images during the course.

We learned how to work with models and direct them to help create amazing images and moods. By the end of the course we all had gained confidence in working with good models.

I would highly recommend the course to people that have never worked with models, or studio lights. If you have worked with models and were not quite sure how to direct the scene, then this is also a great course.

Well done and I hope to take another class in the near future.”

“Calumet portrait photography course March 2014”

I can summarise this quite quickly: brilliant!

Rory Lewis Photography Workshops & CoursesI don’t get much of a chance to experiment with a studio set up and professional models; this was the perfect opportunity. Both Rory and the model really helped with the instructions, this being what you’d normally expect like lighting, but also on how various positions of the head/eyes etc. can make a huge difference to the outcome of the shot. But in addition to the actual teaching, it was good fun. Both had a good sense of humour which made the whole experience “a laugh” as well as being very informative. And they were incredibly patient as each of the pupils (including me) made a pig’s ear of one thing and another. If you’ve ever thought about trying a course like this, do it now, you won’t regret it.
