A “forceful, commanding stage presence” Sir Derek Jacobi is one of the most Celebrated British Stage Actors of our Time. Sir Derek’s talent was recognised at a young age by Laurence Olivier. Though principally a stage actor, Jacobi has appeared in a number of television series and films; series such as I, Claudius, for which he won a BAFTA; in the acclaimed medieval drama series Cadfael, and as Stanley Baldwin in The Gathering Storm. Films such as Henry V, Dead Again, Gladiator, Gosford Park, The Golden Compass, The King’s Speech and My Week with Marilyn. He holds a British knighthood and has been appointed a Knight 1st Class of the Order of the Dannebrog. Recently I wrote to Sir Derek to request a portrait sitting, and I was delighted when he accepted my invitation.
Photographed in London, it was a privilege to meet Sir Derek. I just wanted to take a plain and simply lit portrait, and directed Jacobi to pose solemnly and with little emotion.
