Love the Salon Cheltenham Spa Photoshoot

Last week I was commissioned by Love the Salon in Cheltenham to shoot their entries for the Wella Trend Vision competition 2013. It was great working with their Talented styling team.

Throughout the afternoon we shot three distinctive looks, I wish Graham and the guys all the best for the competition and hope to work with them again soon!

No Substitute for Good Hair Salon Photography

There can be no substitute for good marketing that promotes your hair salon and engages your customers. Professional hair photography brings the styles and textures of hair design to life. With websites like twitter and facebook, your  existing and potential clients are now looking at social networking sites and on a regular basis; being bombarded by advertising from your competitors through this medium. Your salon needs to stand out and market the excellence of its products through photography that sets it apart from all the others in online and in print.

I specialise in commercial, editorial and awards photography, working with some of the best talent in the hair and beauty world. Shooting commissions for the British Hair Dressing Awards, the L’Oreal Colour Trophy and Wella Trend Vision Competitions.

Successful photoshoots are a big team effort and it is important to know that we can work together on the day to get outstanding results. I am closely involved in each shoot at an early stage and can help with all aspects from looking for models to finding a makeup artist and clothes stylist that can work successfully to your brief.

Stunning images of your work can have a big impact on the success of your business and attract prestige and new clients in a number of ways.

One shoot can produce a collection of photographs for your salon that can lead to great coverage on facebook, twitter,  in magazines, local, national and consumer/trade press. Using the shoot photographs on your salon walls, appointment cards, website and brochures are the ultimate advertisement for your business.

 (Rory Lewis)

The shoot can be used for hair competitions, and can attract the best stylists to boost your salon. A photoshoot is also a great way to reward your stylists and generate fresh energy and creativity in the team.

Young Hairdresser of the Year 09 Finalists’ Photos

A collection of images by Rory Lewis Photographer will feature in the finals of the prestigious , Young Hairdressees Awards 2009.

The photographs showcase the work of salon finalists Hooka and were short-listed from thousands of applications across the UK.

Rory’s years of experience shooting fashion and hair means the resulting photographs combine precision lighting techniques and attention to detail that keep the styles dynamic.

His approach to hair photography is based on vibrancy, sensuality and movement, both in close-cropped and ¾ length shots, and this captured the eye of the experienced panel of judges from Hairdresser’s Journal.

Rory said: “Shooting hair is very different to shooting fashion; both require technical skill and detailed preparation to create powerful imagery but careful composition is crucial with hair photography to properly showcase the styles and bring them to life. Often there is very little time with the models on the shoot so I need to quickly get them moving into positions that really work to get the feel right. It is great that the judges of this award were able to see the true skill of the stylists at Hooka through my images.”

Rory forged a close working relationship with Hooka and hair stylist, Jon Wraight, throughout the preparation for the shoot; providing expert advice on looks from the mood boards and casting, and inputting creative ideas for the shoot. This included helping to shape the artistic team of stylists and make-up artists to create the entry for the awards.

Jon said he was very happy with the creative process and the end result. He said: “It looks like something you see in Vogue – high end editorial. It has turned out amazing”.

Rory said: “I work closely with each client before the start of a shoot to establish the look they are after and this drives my preparation,”. “With hair photography, you have to make sure that all the aspects work together, and that the makeup compliments, rather than overrides the story of the shoot. Flexibility is essential to make changes that get the best end results if necessary. The lighting should enhance the hair and not flatten the feel while keeping that vital energy that shows the detail of the style and uses the impact from creating shadows.”

Hooka Salon Liverpool

I was approached by Hooka Hair Salon to take some photos for their Wella Colour Trophy Competition. Hooka invited members of the public and models have their hair cut and the images look great. Hooka is based on Water Street in Liverpool; the staff at the Salon are fantastic, all very much down to earth and a great laugh. Not to mention fantastic hairdressers. I definitely know where I will be going for my haircut in the future!
