Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden Portrait Sitting

It was wonderful last week to meet and photograph the New Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Roz Gladden. Before the portrait sitting, Roz talked about her political career and explained she fell in love with Liverpool from the first time she came here over thirty years ago. A staunch defender of the city and its people, she explained this is my city of choice and I cannot think of a higher honour that could be bestowed on me than to represent the place that I call home.

The sitting took place at Liverpool’s iconic Town Hall and the Portrait is part of an on-going project, capturing each new Lord Mayor of Liverpool on an annual basis. I have grown up in Liverpool and continually play a role in Photographing its most distinguished politicians.

H.E Claus Grube Ambassador Portrait Sitting

Ambassador Claus Grube is one of Denmark’s most experienced diplomats notably in EU matters, he is the Danish Ambassador to the United Kingdom. I was delighted as the Ambassador accepted my invitation to sit for a portrait to be featured in my ‘Ambassadors Project‘. Grube a well respected politician took up his new position as Ambassador in the UK on 1 October 2013. Since then, his home has been the Ambassador’s Residence in the Arne Jacobsen-designed embassy building in Sloane Street.

I visited the embassy last week to capture the portrait. Before taking up the position in London Claus Grube was Permanent Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, and prior to this appointment enjoyed an extensive career within the Ministry. I wanted to capture a series of portraits which reflected the Ambassadors, wonderful personality and the responsibilities of his office.

H.E Pasquale Terricciato Ambassador of Italy Portrait Sitting

Ambassador Pasquale TerraccianoAs part of my long term project Ambassadors. I wrote to the Italian Ambassador Pasquale Terricciato who to my delight; graciously accepted my invitation to sit for a Portrait in London. The sitting took place at the Italian Residence in London’s Grosvenor Square. Upon entering the building I could sense its history, the Ambassador very kindly gave me a personal tour. Allowing me to view previous portraits of Italian Representatives throughout the past 200 years, who like the Ambassador have represented Italy in UK.

After a fine cup of Italian Coffee we set to work on the portrait. Terricciato with over 30 years in politics is a veteran of the diplomatic service. I aimed to capture a portrait to reflect the responsibly and importance of his office; directing Pasquale to look solum and responsible with a series of plain and emotionless expressions. The Ambassador very pleased with the portraits announced he would hang the finished product on the historic embassy wall. This is praise indeed as it will be appreciated even 100 years from now.  (Rory Lewis)
